Standards-Based Global EducationWe know we have to address the state of Nebraska's standards as we teach our children. Those standards may seem rather limiting, but they really aren't. Check out the standards and how I've globalized them below. You can use these or utilize them as a template for addressing your own state standards!

Multiple Literacies: LA7.4.2.b Use appropriate digital tools (e.g. social media, online collaborative tools, apps) to communicate with others for conveying information, gathering opinions and solving problems.
Integration of Global Education:
*Students will collaborate using digital tools with students beyond our local geographic area. *Students will use digital tools to investigate their environment to learn about issues of global importance. Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies: *Students will analyze the usefulness of several digital technologies (epals, Skype, Google Docs, blogs etc) for completing their project. *Students will demonstrate the appropriate use of the digital tools during their collaboration on the larger group project, especially focusing on how it can help them in collaborating with people beyond our geographic area. *Students will investigate new technologies (apps, etc) and analyze their usefulness in completing the tasks assigned in the larger group project. Informal Outcome Assessment: *Students will complete a written assessment of the benefits and risks of their digital technologies. *Students will successfully use at least two digital tools in completion of their project. LA 7.3.3d Listen, ask probing questions, and interpret information being communicated and consider its contribution to a topic, text, or issue under study.

*Students will understand multiple perspectives by listening, asking probing questions and interpreting information being communicated.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies:
*Students will practice these skills by doing a skype or other digital communication with a class in another area.
*Students will learn about different communication rules and how culture influences communication, using this knowledge to more effectively communicate with students in another area.
*Students will choose a topic, text or issue that has global implications to study
Informal Outcome Assessment:
*Students will successfully communicate with their counterparts in the other classroom.
*Students will write a reflection on the experience and analyze any communication breakdowns and how to solve them.
LA 7.4.2 Practice safe and ethical behaviors when communicating and interacting with others digitally (e.g., safe information to share, appropriate language use, utilize appropriate sites and materials, respect diverse perspectives).
Integration of Global Education:
*Students will collaborate with other classrooms using digital tools safely .
*Students will learn about appropriate language use in other countries (appropriate methods of address, etc).
*Students will understand what information to share with people that they have never met and how to determine what is appropriate based on the culture/situation.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies:
*Students will demonstrate their ability to use safe and ethical behaviors by participating in a digital pen pal exchange, perhaps through epals.
*Students will look at examples of different cultures and determine, based on the situation, what sort of information would be safe/appropriate to share and what information would not be safe/appropriate.
*Students will analyze a conversation to determine where miscommunication/inappropriate communication occurred and design a fix-up strategy.
Informal Outcome Assessment:
*Students will successfully complete a conversation using ethical and appropriate behavior.
*Students will be able to identify how a perspective is different than theirs and two fixup strategies to use when the communication breaks down.
*Students will collaborate with other classrooms using digital tools safely .
